“I am proposing Professor Dr Djuro Macut as candidate for Prime Minister to the National Assembly,” Vucic said in a document he signed at the news conference. The deadline to form a new government is April 18. Milos Vucevic resigned as prime minister in January and parliament took note of his resignation on March 19.

According to Vucic, Macut, an MD specializing in endocrinology, has the professional and personal qualities required to head a government as well as the expertise and commitment. “He assured me that he can secure the majority for a new government,” he said.

The opposition Serbia Center (SRCE) party said that it’s clear that Vucic runs the government and that it’s not important if Macut, Vucevic or Brnabic are prime minister.

Vucic said the new government faces a number of serious jobs including opposing all pressures over regional policy, the US tariffs, faster European accession wile maintaining traditional friendships in the East and restoring investment levels as well as maintaining peace and stability and showing patience and tolerance. “The government must have a clear commitment towards the future and we intend to bring Serbia back to a winning position as the fastest growing economy by the end of the year,” he said adding that one of the main jobs facing the new government is the realization of the EXPO 2027.

Dr Macut is a professor of internal medicine and endocrinology at Belgrade University’s School of Medicine and is deputy chief of the Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases Hospital at the University Clinical Center and heads the endocrinology tumors department. He became known to the public as one of the people who gave support to the alleged students at the pro-regime camp in front of the Serbian Presidency building when he is reported to have said that politics should not be part of the university.
