President Aleksandar Vucic said on Tuesday that Belgrade will not nationalize the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS) but will pay for the Russian shares in the company.

He told the GOLBSEC BELTALKS Forum that there were 3 ways to resolve the situation – the US could issue a license to NIS or revoke the sanctions (which he said is not likely), the Russians could sell their shares to some other company (and I hope they won’t) and the third option is for the state to act by January 15.

NIS has been included in the US sanctions against the Russian energy sector.

According to Vucic, January 15 is the final deadline. “We are facing secondary sanctions… We are the only country of the region with an investment rating …. Now that has been jeopardized because of the NIS situation,” he said.

He added that he is waiting to hear from Moscow about a deal to supply natural gas, adding that Serbia is prepared to diversify its energy sources.
