Vucic: No decision yet on Kosovo elections
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Friday that a decision on Kosovo Serb participation in new local elections has not been taken yet.
Speaking live on the pro-regime TV Prva, Vucic said that he needs to talk to the European Union and US envoys, Miroslav Lajcak and Gabriel Escobar before holding talks with the Kosovo Serbs. “Let me talk and negotiate. I will talk about that on Tuesday,” he said.
The US President’s Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer told Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic that the US is concerned over the tensions in northern Kosovo. A White House press release said that he urged Belgrade to withdraw its armed forces from the border area and call protesters to remain peaceful.
According to Vucic, the Kosovo Serbs would win possible new local elections in the north Kosovo municipalities. He said the question is what they would gain by turning out for the vote. “They (the Kosovo Albanian authorities) have been lying that they will form the Community of Serb Municipalities (CSM) for 10 years,” he said.
Vucic sad he knows that the Serbs in the north of Kosovo would prefer to hold local power and see tensions drop. “I have no solution at this moment, no magic wand. I have to think about this for days…. I have to talk to them in the next few days and see what the Serbs can, what security,” he said.
Vucic said he would not allow a transitional government because “everything would stop and foreigners would run the country” but would give the opposition elections in September if they want them.
The Serbian president said the West knows that Pristina and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti are to blame for this week’s escalation of violence but that this does not do the Serbs any good. “He knows that whatever he does, the Americans, English and Germans will say that the so-called independence of Kosovo must be maintained, that the Serb must not be allowed to endanger the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Kosovo, not allow Serbian soldiers and police to return, or even give the Kosovo Serbs wider autonomy but make it (CSM) an NGO,” Vucic said.
