The decoration was awarded at the proposal of Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Sulyok said Vucic was decorated for his „dedication to deepening relations between Hungary and Serbia, for commitment to the development of economic, energy, and security strategic cooperation, as well as for achievements in the historical reconciliation of the Hungarian and Serbian peoples.“ He added that the decoration is a symbol of friendship between the two nations, an expression of mutual respect and a strong alliance.
Vucic said he was accepting the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit with Collar and Gold Star personally and on behalf of the all the citizens of Serbia who appreciate Hungary and count on a common future with “our Hungarian friends”.
He said Serbia and Hungary are always there for each other in current circumstances and added that they are an example of honesty and honor in international relations and other values that are almost gone today.
