The head of the environmental association 'We Don't Give Jadar' (Ne damo Jadar), Zlatko Kokanovic, said that at all polling stations in 15 villages located in the immediate vicinity where the opening of the Rio Tinta mine is planned, Aleksandar Vucic and his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) won convincingly. Kokanovic said that locals voted en masse for Vucic and the SNS parliamentary list because, in the past month, Serbia’s Government ministers visited the area around Gornje Nedeljice on several occasions and promised to build 50 kilometres of roads.

„The locals believed in the Government’s promises and, unfortunately, did not consider how difficult agricultural production was during this Government due to the drastic jump in the prices of fuel, fertilizers and fodder.“

„Many locals are not yet aware that the Government has not given up on Rio Tinto opening a lithium mine,“ Kokanovic said.

The villagers from that area have protested over lithium mining, saying it would devastate their land. Vucic went to Gornje Nedeljice amid the roadblocks, promising the Anglo-Australian project would end.

The Government annulled regulations favouring Rio Tinto, but the company remained in Serbia, and the environmentalists and opposition warned it was just a break before Sunday’s elections.
