The frequent attacks on the Kosovo Serbs, their property and heritage are unacceptable, which is why the UN’s and the international community’s timely reaction and condemnation of provocations is crucial, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told a meeting with UNMIK chief Caroline Ziadeh.

It is essential for Serbia that the issue of Kosovo and Metohija (the official name for what the authorities consider to be the country’s southern province) continues to be discussed in the United Nations Security Council, primarily so that the international community is transparently informed about the situation on the ground, the Serbian President’s Office quoted him as saying.

Vucic stressed that Serbia consistently and continuously advocates the honoring of the principles of international law and the implementation of the legally binding UN Security Council Resolution 1244, under which UNMIK was established. He said UNMIK’s continued presence and engagement in Kosovo is necessary, primarily because of the permanent instability and the many incidents that are taking place.

Belgrade is fully committed to dialogue, which was demonstrated by its willingness to continue negotiations in Brussels, as well as by the overall efforts aimed at reaching a solution to the crisis triggered by Pristina’s unilateral moves, said Vucic. Serbia will succeed in preserving peace and stability, the President stressed, adding that Belgrade is committed to improving regional cooperation, which directly contributes to the reconciliation process.

Ziadeh said that, in line with its mandate, UNMIK honors the UN Charter and Resolution 1244 and strongly supports the honoring of all international agreements.
