Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic draped the Serbian flag across his back at the UN General Assembly session, on Thursday, where the Resolution on the Srebrenica genocide was passed. Lawyer Vesna Rakic Vodinelic assessed this use of the flag as inappropriate. Pročitaj više

„This is the flag of honour, the flag of the brave, the flag of freedom! I just took her with me to the UN building. I will defend and protect her. And I will be proud of her. We are not a genocidal people! Long live Serbia!“, the President wrote on Instagram with a photo of the Serbian flag.

As reported by Tanjug, despite the opposition of the President of the United Nations Assembly and the demands of security to take it down, he did not do it. Instead, he told them – „no one in the world will take my flag away from me.“

The use of the flag of the Republic of Serbia is regulated by the Law on the Appearance and Use of the Coat of Arms, Flag and Anthem.

Lawyer Vesna Rakic Vodinelic does not see the President’s flag-draping as a direct violation of the said law, but she is certain that its use was inappropriate.

„The legislator could not even assume that someone would use the flag for the purpose of dressing, as if in a wardrobe, so they did not even mention this. In any case, wearing the flag, if it’s not a theatrical performance, is somehow inappropriate,“ the lawyer pointed out.

Rakic Vodinelic said that she did not remember an example of statesmen displaying the flags of their countries in this way at UN sessions.
