Communal services began removing garbage from a waste transfer station outside the western city of Cacak following days of protests by local people.

The protesters, all from the village of Prelici, told the Beta news agency that they would not lift their road blocks and were recording every truck removing waste to make sure more garbage isn’t brought to the transfer station.

The agreement to remove the communal waste was reached with Cacak city officials on Monday evening after three days of road blocks. The protesters said Cacak Mayor Milu Todorovic arrived at the road block with city officials at 7 pm with documents stating that the waste from the transfer station would be removed within 30 days with no new waste brought in. According to the documents, the station would be shut down. The protesters said their road blocks would remain in place until the station is removed.

The station was built on what was the city waste dump which was shut down in 2011 when a regional dump was set up outside the city of Uzice. A fire closed that dump down and the local communal services used the transfer station in Prelici.
