Water supply contaminated in Belgrade suburb
Residents of a Belgrade suburb drank contaminated water for two days because the city communal services failed to issue a warning.
Residents of the Zeleznik suburb told an N1 reporter that the water supply was cut on June 24 and was restored on Wednesday and again on Friday last week but added that no one told them the water was contaminated by sewage. They said communal services crews were send in to repair or replace old asbestos-based pipes when they damaged a sewer pipe. The repair crew left the water supply pipes open when they left and sewage spilled over contaminating the suburb’s drinking water supplies in the heavy rain over the past few days.
One of the residents said the water was contaminated on Friday and added that the city water supply company issued a warning on Monday. The city authorities sent tanker trucks with drinking water into the suburb.
N1 reached out to the water supply company for a comment but got no reply. A post on the company’s web site said that the water supply was cut off because of possible water contamination.
