The opposition in the city of Zajecar will demand a repeat of elections at all polling stations - 69 in total - after identifying irregularities at every single location during just 12 hours they had on Wednesday to review election materials, said N1’s reporter. Local elections were held in Zajecar on June 8.
The reporter added that not all opposition groups were given a chance to review election materials.
Despite the short time they had to examine the materials, the opposition spotted numerous irregularities, which are not just technical errors, as the head of the Zajecar City Election Commission (GIK), Nenad Dinulovic explained, said N1’s reporter.
“The opposition said it has already submitted over 250 complaints. Whether commission officials will address these complaints remains to be seen today. If not, opposition representatives are threatening criminal complaints to the prosecutor's office, since they believe these elections cannot under any circumstances be considered legitimate,” the reporter said.
She noted that the opposition has sent a message to the president and warned him that these elections must be annulled at all levels, and if not, they have called on citizens to join their fight to pressure for new elections.
They are announcing renewed protests and say they will not allow the new local parliament to be constituted, she said, adding that the opposition in Zajecar claims to have won the elections, that is, that they have at least 2,000 more votes than the ruling party representatives.
The reporter also noted that the opposition believes the prosecutor’s office and police are not doing their job, that they are allegedly loyal to the authorities, and that the prosecutor’s office should have acted on its own - without criminal complaints being filed - especially regarding reports of people receiving money to vote for the ruling party ticket.
However, Zajecar City Election Commission (GIK) head Nenad Dinulovic told the Tanjug news agency on Thursday that the opposition filed a total of 78 complaints after reviewing voting materials in Zajecar, and that the Municipal Election Commission has 72 hours to decide on them.
According to preliminary results from the local elections held on June 8 in the city, the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) list “We Won’t Give Up Serbia - Aleksandar Vucic" won the most votes with 47.13 percent or 27 seats in the local assembly.
The “Change We Believe In” ticket won 19 seats with 10,312 votes or 34.23 percent, while “United to Save Zajecar” got 2,284 votes or 7.58 percent and four seats.
Final results are to be announced 96 hours after the closing of polling stations closed or 96 hours from when complaints were filed.
