The spokeswoman of the Serbian Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) Olivera Zekic told FoNet on Thursday that students don’t elect the members of the REM Council and added that they think the body is a rock group.
Zekic is a former REM Council Chairwoman and a critic of the student protests who is seen as a supporter of the authorities. The REM is supposed to be an independent body.
Commenting the students’ demand for a new call to apply for posts in the REM Council, Zekic said that neither she nor the REM are the right address for that demand. “The address is the Serbian parliament. The competition is underway and there is no need to invite new applications regardless of the fact that 7 candidates withdrew their applications. Parliament can choose from the other applicants for an almost complete REM Council,” she said.
According to her, parliament has to decide whether to annul this competition or call a new one.
“I’d like to ask the students if they know what the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media is. I am completely convinced the 99 percent of them think it’s a rock group,” she said and added that the demand to shut down the REM is a “phantasmagory” “They have to pump but they’re not doing so well and they make things up,” Zekic said.
