The leader of the Democratic Alliance of Vojvodina Croats (DSHV), Tomislav Zigmanov, expressed concern over recent cases of Croatian citizens being expelled from Serbia and called for interstate disputes to be resolved peacefully.

“Given the complexity, strain and sensitivity of Croatian-Serbian relations, any actions by state authorities require extra consideration and a more institutionally appropriate approach,” the DSHV leader said in a written statement quoted by Hina.

According to Zigmanov, who is a minister in Serbia’s caretaker government, the overall Croatian-Serbian relationship must be based on the principles of open dialogue, mutual respect and the desire to resolve outstanding issues in the mutual interest and in an institutionally suitable manner.

In this context, he added, any situation that may cause insecurity or discomfort among citizens, their nationals, in another state, “must serve as a call for additional attention and responsible action by all relevant institutions.”

Therefore, he continued, all potential disputes should be resolved through diplomatic and interstate mechanisms – peacefully, cooperatively and with full understanding of the needs of both sides.

Croatian citizen Arien Stojanovic Ivkovic, who graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade, got a job, married, and started a family, was denied hospitality by Serbian authorities after 12 years of living in Belgrade, expelled from the country and banned from entering for one year, as reported by N1 TV.

The Croatian Ambassador to Serbia, Hidajet Biscevic, said that about 15 Croatian citizens have been expelled from the country in a similar manner since the beginning of the year.
